CONGRATS STEVE!

I am very happy to be once again posting about the benefits of eating cereal for breakfast. As I have stated, my boys love eating cereal and not just for breakfast, they would eat it all day if I let them, which wouldn’t neccessarily be a bad thing considering the health  benefits.

Did you know that cereal is the number one dietary source of many key nutrients including iron, zinc and folic acid? Having one very picky, vegetables are icky, child, having him like and want to eat cereal, makes me feel better about him getting the nutrients he needs. Also, since a typical breakfast of cereal contributes to more than 30 percent of needed calcium, iron and B vitamins, I know that his little body is getting what it is lacking.

True story: The other day we went shopping and hen we came to the cereal isle, I told him to pick out the cereal he wanted and he surprised me by picking Chex, both the Cinnamon and Chocolate. I love Chex, but be honest, it’s not the first thing kids usually go for, am I right? It doesn’t have bright colors and marshmallows 😉 Even though he chose Chex, Big G kids’ line of cereals contain at least 8 grams of whole grain (48 grams recommended daily) and is a good source of both calcium and vitamin D in every serving, so no matter what he chose, it’s a win-win situation.

  1. I raised them eating healthy so they just eat healthy! I started them with veges before fruits so they would like there veges! I always get compliments from people because my kids would rather eat veges then candy and cakes!

  2. I usually buy foods that have “hidden” nutrition to them. Such as items that add extra servings of veggies or vitamins.

  3. I’ll make smoothies or purees to get my son to eat the nutritious stuff! Gotta be a little sneaky sometimes! 🙂

  4. my kids love healthy foods so I’m lucky i dont have to struggle to get them to eat em

  5. I give my son a choice of the healthy cereals but honestly the best way to get him to eat the good stuff is by not giving him the bad stuff. He feels important cus he made a choice & I get him to eat what I want too. Its a win win situation *works well with husbands too*

  6. I try to hide nutritious foods into the foods they love to eat, if they are resistant to eating it off the plate, like adding it to a cake mix or casserole. They don’t notice and get the nutrients they need!

  7. I TELL MY KIDS ITS “LIKE CANDY”. IT AT LEAST GETS THEM TO TRY IT AND 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 THEY END UP LOVING IT!

  8. My son has been raised eating healthy, so no convincing needed.
    Like FSM on fb.

  9. I am also a fan on Facebook and to get my kids to eat nutritious foods, I cut fruits and veggies into fun shapes and serve them with peanut butter, low-fat caramel or cheese.

  10. My two sons have a favorite food… It is any type of cereal!!!! They would eat it for every meal if they could! I a fan of you on facebook! We could really use the cereal prize pack! Thank you

  11. My kids will eat all kinds of raw veggies if I let them dip them in Ranch dressing. So I just make sure to get fat free 🙂 They can’t tell the difference. It also helps that I let them pick their own veggies from the garden!

  12. One way I get my kids to eat nutritiously is to offer low fat/cal dip choices at nearly every meal. My kids love dipping things!

  13. To get my kids to eat veggies, I either put cheese on them or give them ranch dip. It doesn’t take much for them as long as they know its there. With their cereal, I just tell them I added sugar (even though I didn’t). They can’t tell the difference. I may have trouble as they get older.

  14. An easy way you get your children to eat the nutritious foods they need? I do not know. My son was a very selective eater and he ate only when he was hungry (he’s 29 now and the exact same). All I can say is they will eat when they want and will eat healthy foods if you have absolutely no cookies, cake, candy, and sugar-laden cereals in the house because there is nothing else to eat. Also, I consider anything that is not all processed sugar or white flour to be healthy enough.

  15. I’m already a fan on Facebook:) My kids LOVE fruits and vegetables,
not so much for myself. I always warn friends and family if they plan on a veggie tray at gatherings have extra or let me know and I will bring my own for the kids. They will clear it before even thinking about chips and dip. We love making smoothies together.

  16. I have always encouraged healthy eating habits. My dad has a small garden and my kids love to go pick the fresh fruits and vegetables. They go and check on the plants and have watched them grow. So they are more opened to eating the fruits and vegetables since they helped grow them.

  17. my youngest is 13 and still grabs a bowl of dry cereal when we take road trips…its so much better than filling up on sugary snacks…

  18. My sons are grown now but when they were at home I always had fresh fruits and vegetables available to them. They always ate healthy breakfasts before school and healthy snacks after school. I stocked the frig with fruit juices, not fruit drinks which are mostly sugar water.

  19. The best way to get my three young kiddos to eat a variety of food is by letting them help me plant the garden, grocery shop and cook/bake the food. So letting them be involved helps mold the kiddos into a healthier eater!

  20. I am not a tweeter…sorry…but i would tweet if i could…lol….im still in the dinosaur age for that one!

  21. Thanks God my daughter love the cereals and the protein snack Bars, otmeal and carrots, I keep away from sugary foods and chocolate bar and candys, because is her weakness simply do not buy them regularly so they do not fall into temptation

  22. l get my klds t0 eat nutrl0us f00ds by cuttlng frult lnt0 fun shapes. they are b0th t0ddlers s0 they l0ve lt

  23. Llke free sample m0mma 0n faceb00k as brittany doerfler-thompson

  24. I take him with me to the farmer’s market or the grocery store and have him pick out his fruits and veggies for the week. Then I have him help me make certain dinners. Also, we talk about why he should eat them, carrots make you see great so you can catch the ball, etc. And the old standby, no desset unless he eats all the fruits and veggies on his plate.

  25. I am lucky to have children that eat pretty nutritious foods without much complaint. But when they were smaller and much pickier I would make faces with their food, add dips and cheese, whatever to make it more appealing for them. 🙂

  26. The VERY easiest way I get my kids to eat healthy? Start early and stay consistent. We also eat the same meals as our kids, so they have no excuse to ask for anything different from what we’re having. You’d be surprised at how many 3 & 5 year olds like asparagus! 😉

  27. I had a hard time betting my 4yr old to eat dinner. We have started to let him leave the table when the rest of us finish eating. However we keep his plate and when he says he is hungry he must eat from that before he can have a snack.

  28. I don’t have kids at home any more. This would be awesome for the hubby. He was just diagnosed with Insulin dependent diabetesvcthis would be FANTASTIC for portion control!

  29. I have a 5 year old and a 6 year old and I have found that putting snacks for them in little ziploc bags so they can eat it on the go helps me to get some healthy snacks in them…:)

  30. I get my kids to eat the nutrients they need by telling them that it’s grown-up food and they can’t have any. Of course, the grocery bill goes up because now the kids love asparagus and artichokes as much as I do!

  31. Well when my daughter was a baby (a while ago), It was just she and I alone, and we never had much money for food. But to lighten our spirits and make her smile at every meal- I used to cut her foods into facial expressions. If I made her a grilled cheese for dinner with chickcen noodle soup I would cut the sandwhich in triangles and they would be the eyebrows. I’d take olives and make it’s eyes, the nose would always be a long sliced pickle (she loved them!), and I would cut a carrot in the shape of the mouth.(or more pickles slithly trimmed). The soup bowl would be the swimming pool and each facial detail would “spring board” off the pickle diving into the soup! Guess you could say we went to the pool often!
Breakfast was fun with eggs being eyes, bacon or sausage for squiggly mouth and toast as eyebrows. Sometimes the nose would be peanutbutter.
We always made a meal a “happy time”, no tv, no phones and no music. Just our imagination at play with foods to fuel her tiny body.
It may sound silly, but it was fun, and filling. That tradition continues today when she visits for lunch. It still to this day makes her smile-or giggle. Happy times! Thanks!

  32. Sorry, I haven’t learned yet how to “tweet” with twitter…So I posted the comment on my facebook wall. Thanks so much!!

  33. The best way is to make it fun…. ad fun colors or funny designs to the food

  34. I follow FSM on facebook every day!!!! Love her!!! The easiest way to get my kids to eat healthy is to let them explore new foods without forcing them to eat. My kids are very picky but it seems to work so far!!

  35. a great way to get them to get nutrients is to sneak it into foods they already love.

  36. I have a daycare center so,I make all their food look fun and appetizing. It makes my life easier and the childrens life easier.

  37. My daughter is a very picky eater, but I have found ways to get her to eat healthy, which include buying things that are full of vitamins, but taste like things she loves… like Carnation Instant Breakfast. She calls it her “super kid milk” and has no idea it’s good for her. Dinner time is a little different though. Since she’s four, my husband and I will also tell her to take “4 more bites” of something before she can leave the table. Of course she stuffs it all in at once, so we have to slow her down, but we can usually get her to eat just a little bit more of something on her plate if we use the “4 more bites” tactic. We also don’t let her candy until she eats something good, and what we tell her, not what she wants.

  38. It not too hard to get my kids to eat something healthy. Breakfast they will usually eat cereal, or I’ll make them some pancakes, they will always drink milk with either of these. Lunch we will usually make something frozen, and we’ll have some crystal light to drink, or water. When dinner comes around I will have a salad, some type of meat, of course gravy, and maybe some rice or noodles to go along with it, and they’ll drink water, crystal light, or sometimes I’ll allow them to have soda. If my kids eat enough of the salad and have at least one good-sized piece of meat, some nights I’ll let them have some dessert which will be ice cream.

  39. I act lik we are a temoviesr beech or mix the suff that dnttast egoodlike veggies with fruit and freeze it for slushie little treats

  40. Signed up for emails. It’s pretty easy to get my kids to eat anything. We play restaurant at every meal and the only fight is over who gets to serve!

  41. I am one lucky mama. My 2 year old daughter just loves her fruits and veggies. I don’t have a hard time getting her to eat healthy. What two year old loves having a bowl of salad? LOL.

  42. We mix healthy grain cereals to make trail mixes and I put them in little snack ziplocs .. great for trips and long car rides! 🙂

  43. What has worked for me thus far has been introducing healthy foods as young as possible and no sweets until age 2. My daughter still chooses sliced bell pepper over candy any day.

  44. With our lifestyle we don’t have to try and get the girls to eat healthy, they just do…it is what they know. fruit wins everytime over candy (and yes they like candy)

  45. We try to have only healthy snacks available so that’s all they have to eat!

  46. My cereal dispencer would ALWAYS be filled with Cheerios..My very favorite cereal in da world!

  47. I usually get my children to eat nutritious food that they need by being creative with ways that I prepare it — for instance, adding fiber packed black beans to brownies, using a fiber cereal as a coating on chicken fingers, or by serving General Mills cereals – I know they get the ‘good stuff’ and they LOVE the cereal choices.

  48. In order to get kids to eat healthy, I try to set a great example myself — if that doesn’t work, I sneak it in! LOL

  49. an easy way I get my children to eat the nutritious foods they need is to make fun shapes and make colorful rainbows!!!

  51. Kids are visual and they seen the box for all there lives..this makes it fun and they will show there friends and you will show yours..Great Product!

  52. i always feed my 1 year old healthy cereal in the morning! I think a great way to bond with the family is to eat meals together.

  53. To get my son to eat the good foods he needs I have him help me prepare the food. He especially loves picking out, coking and eating broccoli. I also sometimes puree or dice veggies really small to add to sauces, soups and stews. I especially love doing this with spaghetti sauce since I know my kiddo eats it up 🙂

  54. I ‘like’ Free Sample Momma’ on Facebook. Facebook name : Lee Ann Kaplan

  55. I follow @freesamplemomma on twitter and I tweeted the giveaway! twitter name: Rubies87

  56. We’re all good, I have previously “Liked” and “followed” I did re-tweet.
Have you heard of banana dogs? We take a hot dog roll, slather it with peanut butter (protein!) (mommy gets chunky PB) and put a banana in the bun like a hot dog. Bread, fruit, Protein. serve with milk for the last food group!!

  57. one thing my daughter likes is to pick fruits and veggies from the farmers market and to help in the garden for what we grow ourselves

  58. My grandmother called this, “An Egg In A Basket”. Instead of frying an egg the old fashion way she would take a slice of wheat bread, cut a circle out of the middle, place it in the pan and fry the egg inside the cut-out of the bread. I actually started doing this with my kids last year. They thought it was so funny…lol.

  59. I follow on facebook n twitter…kids tend to pick a cereal with what the box looks like example if its colorful

  60. Hi!
I think the best way to get kids to eat nutritious foods is by setting the example by eating them yourself. If a child wont try a new food, then have some and tell them how good it tastes and make a big deal out of the food item tasting great.

  61. Actually I love cereal for getting some quick and easy nutrition in them. Just gotta watch the sugar content and make sure they like it at the same time.

I am already a follower on FB, I started following on Twitter, I tweeted it and requested emails.

    Thanks!

  62. I get my kids to eat healthier by giving them fruit popsicles instead of sugar ones, having them eat yogurt & fruit or “ants on a log” instead of chips and candy. It’s really hard to have any junk food in the house and convince them to make the healthier choice.

  63. One thing I try to do to get my kids to eat healthy is to have cut up fruit in the fridge. If it’s something they can grab and go then they are more than likely to eat it. 🙂

  64. The way I get my children to eat nutritiously is by eating that way myself. Lead by example! ~loving my children~

  65. I am lucky in the fact that my kids really enjoy fruits and vegetables. My older son who is 12 was following a modified Weight Watchers with me and has learned how to read and understand the nutritional info on the back of foods. Don’t get me wrong they like their sweets. I let them have sweets in moderation. I make sure to make sure they eat a balanced meal by only offering them healthy choices for their main 3 meals a day.

  66. I get my daughter to eat healthy foods, by eating them myself. She looks up to me (she’s only 3) haha, so she mimicks every move I make. I pretend to have fun with my veggies (though I’m not a huge fan of them myself), I over exaggarate on how wonderful they are and my excitement rubs off on her and she gets really excited about eating hers too! It’s actually quite entertaining to watch us sit down and eat carrots 😉

  67. I always sneak the foods they need incognito with things they Love for example, My daughter HATES Chicken and Broccoli so what do I do? I use ground chick instead of ground beef in pasta dish and I cut the broccoli small enough and add it to the sauce… sneaky sneaky 🙂

  68. An easy way is to let them help you in the kitchen. they will have so much fun making it with you that they will be so proud and excited to eat it after

  69. I followed you on twitter, I told you how I get my granddaughter to eat, and I signed up for you newsletter

  70. i signed up for your newsletter, I followed you on twitter, I told you that I pretend my granddaughter disappeared and with every bite she takes I pretend part of her reappears by the time it is gone she is all there again lol

  71. To get my girls to eat healthy, I reduce the amount of sugar in the house and provide fruits and vegetables to snack on. Some cereals they like are now offering reduced sugar cereals, which is fantastic! I can’t control what’s at their friend’s houses, but I can control what’s at mine. If it’s not here as a temptation, they won’t desire it.
