Twitter Tips for Bloggers

I belong to a few blogging groups, and the number one question that pops up over and over again is “How do I Get More Twitter Followers?”

The following are a few tips that have helped me:

1. Make Your Profile Stand out – Once you sign up, make sure you fill out your profile information. Make a background that matches your blogs background, or at least uses the same color scheme. Make sure to also upload a user pic, this could be your blog button or an actual picture, your choice. The bio section should also be filled out completely, as well as placing a link to your blog. When people check out your profile, this is the first place they look and could be the first impression they get, so make it good 😉

2. Share it – Once you have a profile, be sure to link it everywhere…on your blog, your email newsletter, under posts, connect through Facebook and so on. Give your readers the option to follow you wherever they are.

3. Be Real – Make sure that you aren’t auto-Tweeting all the time. This is where lots of people go wrong and wonder why they aren’t getting new followers. If you auto-post from FB and/or your blog, make sure to personally Tweet every once in awhile.

4. Follow People Who Interest You –  The number one mistake is thinking you have to follow everyone who follows you. If you do this, you are going to end up with a ton of spam posts from people who probably added you and then immediately unfollowed once you followed them. Target your audience, do a search for your niche and start following those people. Be sure your follow to follower ratio is pretty close, no one wants to see someone who has 10,000 followers and only follows back 100.

5. Tweet and Retweet! – Pick a few followers and reply to them, say hello, ask a question, anything to make you seem more of a “real” person. Followers love when they actually get personal responses. Did you see a good deal, a freebie or a coupon that was a must share? Simply hit the retweet button at the bottom of the post and send it to your followers.

6. Present the Option to Follow – If you host giveaways, make following you on Twitter one of the entries.

7. Remind your readers – If you have a large Facebook Fan Page and/or blog following, post your Twitter link to get some of those fans to follow you.

The main point of all of this is – Be Real – the more you engage, the more followers you will get in return.

I think re-tweeting is pretty effective in gaining followers, and this is based on my experience too.
