If you are a fan of Spongebob since the beginning or if you are a brand new fan THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE ON THE RUN will make you incredibly happy.
This is the first time a SpongeBob movie is presented entirely in CGI. There are also some live-action shots of the guest stars, like Keanu Reeves as Sage, Snoop Dogg as the Gambler, and Danny Trejo As El Diablo just to name a few. Granted, most of these appearances feel like some kind of bizarre fever dream but they are well placed.
Looks aside, the story follows SpongeBob SquarePants, and Patrick as they go in search of Gary who has gone missing. They find out that he has been stolen by King Poseidon, wonderfully voiced by Matt Berry of What We Do In The Shadows fame, who they find out has Gary held captive in the Lost City of Atlantic City.
Of course, during this entire adventure to get his beloved Gary back, SpongeBob’s friends are all there to help him. We also get a little bit of backstory of how they all met. Little SpongeBob is adorable, in case you were wondering.
Overall this feels like a familiar adventure, all of our faves band together to save one of their own, just like they do in a lot of the episodes. Still, it doesn’t mean you won’t want to watch it all unfold. It’s a good ride. Plus the music is pretty awesome.
