Yesterday I decided it was finally time to go outside and clean up the garden. I have a garden that runs along the front and side of the house and several garden boxes in the back of the house. The first thing I noticed was a plethora of these pretty purple plants all over the place. They really are pretty but seeing that there were millions of these “plants” I quickly came to the conclusion that they must be weeds.
So after spending 3 hours digging them all out of the front and side of the house, I looked them up on the trusty ol’ Internet. The pretty purple “plants” are Purple Dead Nettle’s and are considered a weed to some. The funniest thing I found when looking them up was this little bit of folklore: “Believed by some old wives to be a plague of the fields sent to punish the unrighteous.” Well isn’t that just nice. I must be all kinds of “unrighteous” cause the plaque has overtaken my yard! LOL!
The most interesting info was that they are actually edible. You can use the leaves as a dried herb or as a tea. Hmm, very interesting idea but I have dogs, dogs who do their business outside in the yard amongst all of the Purple Dead Nettle, so I don’t think I will be using them in any edible form, seriously.
Here’s a pic of my unrighteous plaque, I mean weed:
