While I was visiting DisneyToon Studios, I had the pleasure to speak with Toby Wilson the art director on Planes: Fire & Rescue. We learned how they created an entire national park from the ground up, everything from the mountains to the lodge, to the coloring of the film, Tony was in charge of bringing all of it to life.
Toby gave us an inside look into how they came up with the ideas for Piston Peak National Park. If you have seen the movie, you know how realistic the park really looks, and how amazing all the details are.
Piston Peak is modeled after both Yellowstone and Yosemite, and for those who have been to both, you will definitely see the likenesses throughout the movie. Toby and the team took countless pictures, interviewed a ton of people to make sure they got every detail exact.
The lodge that is in the movie, the Grand Fusel Lodge (awesome name, right?) is based on Yellowstone’s Old Faithful lodge. The filmmakers were able to visit the lodge and walk through the entire building from top to bottom so they could get everything just right and replicate it for the movie.
Because of all the research and all the work that was put into the film, Planes: Fire & Rescue is stunningly beautiful to look at, and sometimes you even forget that you are watching an animated film because it looks so real!
I hope you get a chance to see the film, you will love every minute, especially if you have visited the parks that have inspired Piston Peak.
