From Apple Original Films comes the story of Sam Greenfield, the unluckiest person in the world, who when she stumbles into the never-before-seen Land of Luck, sets out on a quest to bring some good luck home for her best friend. But with humans not allowed her only chance is to team up with the magical creatures who live there to do it. “Luck” is produced by Skydance Animation.
Sam Greenfield (voiced by Eva Noblezada) is an 18-year-old who finds herself thrust into the adult world when she ages out of the foster care system. She has her own apartment, which she can keep as long as she gets a job. The problem is, Sam has bad luck, you name it, it happens to her and she takes it in stride. Then she meets a black cat and finds a penny that turns everything around, her luck has been changed for the better until she loses it.
This is bad news for the black cat, who we learn is named Bob and can talk with a thick Scottish accent no less, thanks to Simon Pegg who voices the character. Once he realizes that she lost his lucky travel penny he opens up a portal that Sam witnesses and quickly jumps in with him!
They land in the Land of Luck filled with leprechauns, a lucky penny depot, and Babe a Dragon voiced by Jane Fonda. In the Land of Luck, she quickly learns about luck, the good and the bad luck, all with a series of mishaps. They ultimately learn why they both exist and why you need to have the good with the bad.
I won’t give away too much more, but this was really a lovely movie, not only for the message but also to watch because the animation style was nice. The only issue I had was the foster care scenes, they were very bleak, as they should be, but maybe a little too heavy for a kids animated film. I still thought it was a cute little film that doesn’t get too full of itself and helps us understand the luck we create on our own.
