As you know, we homeschool our boys, so we don’t have to walk to school but that doesn’t stop us from walking everywhere else! I love walking and it’s the easiest form of exercise there is. Not only does it help health-wise, it’s also very green and saves money to boot!
I remember fondly, my Mom walking my sister and I to school and back every day, 5 days a week and I loved it. We sang songs, played games and visited all of the neighborhood animals on the way. It also provided a bonding experience between my Mom and us. We would talk about the day ahead and then what we did in school on the way home. Precious memories that I will always cherish.
Do you walk your children to school? If you don’t you should think about starting a new tradition. In celebration of International Walk to School Month in October, the makers of Green Works naturally derived cleaners have created a fun Web site that helps families get involved in that daily trek to school – and win some green for their school.
During the month of October, elementary and middle school students and their families can help their schools win one of five $5,000 grants – simply by walking or bicycling to school. You as Parents are invited and encouraged to sign up online for the Walk to School Challenge where you can log your families’ walking or bicycling trips on behalf of your school. The top five schools will be eligible to win a $5,000 grant! Also, those individuals who walk or bike the most can also win prizes, ranging from green shoelaces to reusable water bottles.
So what are waiting for? I am challenging you to get your walking shoes on and start walking towards making wonderful memories. Make it a fun experience by creating your own games and most of all start talking! Talk about the day, your surroundings, their dreams, etc. These little things are what your children will remember for years to come!
