CONGRATS TO ROSA!

In the world of nutrition, there are a lot of misconceptions, especially relating to breakfast cereal. That is why General Mills is promoting “Truth Behind the Bowl” by working with Dr. Keith Ayoob, an internationally recognized dietitian who has worked extensively in the area of child nutrition, obesity, heart health and family dynamics for more than two decades, to help correct cereal misconceptions and let moms know that cereal is actually one of the healthiest breakfast choices they can make.

According to Dr. Keith Ayoob Ed.D., RD., “Your child’s favorite cereals may actually help fight childhood obesity,” and “Cereal provides key nutrients that are important to overall health and cereals, including sweetened cereals, provide less than 5 percent of a child’s daily sugar intake.” Think about that statement and then compare other breakfast foods likepancakes, waffles and even a bage with cream cheese. Cereal is lower in calories and higher in nutrition.

Here’s how cereal stacks up:

More reasons to serve cereal for breakfast: A 2009 study of children aged 6 to 18 shows cereal eaters have healthier body weights than those who don’t eat cereal, regardless of sweetness level and cereal eaters consume less fat than non-cereal eaters.

As always, it is very important to read the nutrition labels on all foods, and if you look at General Mills nutrition label, you will find that they have reduced the sugar in all of its kids´cereals to single-digit levels per serving. With over 30 different cereals to choose from, General Mills has you covered.  The next time you reach for that stack of pancakes, compare that label to some other common breakfast food options in your house. You will be surprised!

I know I was very surprised at how nutritious cereal really is and again, feel better knowing my kids are cereal chow-hounds 🙂

  29. The big surprise to me is that in a world of sugary sweet cereal, it’s really not that bad for you. It’s vastly imporved in nutrition since I was a kid, some 30+ years ago. I’m so happy to see my kids enjoying the same cereals I did as a kid, but instead of being like my Mom in “One bowl only, it’s too sweet”, I’m the “Sure, you can have a second bowl” Mom. 😉 The sugar is less, the vitamins are more and General Mills is a brand company I trust. Besides, who can’t use travel size cereal? 😉 I’ve shared and Tweeted. Twitter ID http://twitter.com/#!/Cindyvon73
