Did something die in my garbage disposal? That’s the first thing that came to mind one day when I turned it on. The stench that wafted out of the thing nearly knocked me over! So of course, I stuck my hand down there, which always freaks me out, but I had to see if something was stuck, something maybe rotting in there. But there was nothing, just a horrible foul smell emanating from it. Ick!

So of course, I do what millions of people do, I go to the Internet and see if I can find something that will get rid of the smell. I tried lemon and orange peels, baking soda, and even threw some basil leaves down there in hopes it would kill the smell. Nothing worked, the smell came back with a vengeance.

I also checked the dishwasher, since it’s all connected, but didn’t find the source of the smell in there, but did notice that it really needed to be cleaned. That’s something you don’t about, cleaning something that cleans other things, but junk builds up and it needs to be cleaned as well.

So when I was contacted by Whirlpool and Mom Central to be on Team Affresh Dishwasher & Disposal and try out New Affresh by Whirlpool, of course, I jumped at the chance. This odor was driving me nuts!

Affresh Dishwasher and Disposal Cleaner, is the only two-in-one cleaner for dishwashers and garbage disposals and is safe for septic tanks, dishwashers, disposals and plumbing, and is the #1 recommended cleaner by KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag and Amana brands.

As soon as I received my package of Affresh I tore it open immediately. All I had to do was open one of the packets and place one tablet in the dishwasher detergent tray and another in the prewash tray or directly in the bottom of the dishwasher. The tablets are large, and have a citrus smell that  I noticed immediately.

After placing the tablets, I ran the empty dishwasher on the heaviest cycle using the hottest temperature possible. The heat causes the tablets to activate and do their magic. You could smell the scent of citrus while the washer was running.

Since I also have a disposal, I waited until the dishwasher was finished and dropped one down the drain, turned on the disposal and ran hot water for 15 seconds. You do need to let it sit for 30 minutes afterwards so it can again, work it’s magic, then flush with hot water.

Since cleaning both the disposal and dishwasher, I have not had that smell come up, yay! I plan on using it once a month and will be posting again to let you know how it goes.

If you want to see how it works, check out this video from Affresh:

If you are interested in purchasing Affresh, you can find it Nationwide at retailers including Sears, Best Buy, Lowe’s, Kroger and Food Lion, and www.affresh.com. The Affresh® tablets are available via a subscription through the Web site to help consumers save time and money. They generally cost around $5.99 for a package of six tablets.

Disclosure: “I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Affresh and received product samples and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

  1. Wow! Perfect timing. I’m having trouble w/ my dishwasher not cleaning all the way and I think its because the disposal water filter is clogged or coated in oil or something. I’m going to try these out!
