Advances in mobile technology have been nothing short of astonishing over the past few years and current smartphone devices are now capable of console-quality gaming that is as good as a Nintendo Switch and in some cases nearly that of a PS4. Because of this, the gaming market for mobile devices is now estimated at around $80 billion per year and shows no signs of slowing down.
While most mobile games have been stagnant in terms of graphics, game mechanics, and playability, the better technology in newer models means that console-level gaming is now possible on your phone or tablet with some of the most impressive games being:
- Project CARS GO
- Marvel Future Revolution
- Tomb Raider Reloaded
A successful alternative to Gran Turismo, Project CARS has become a recognized brand in its own right while Marvel definitely has a winner on its hands with the first upcoming open-world game set in the comic book universe, and Tomb Raider Reloaded looks to reignite a classic for modern mobile gaming devices.
NOTE: Mobile games require internet access to play but you can check out this Latest Deals guide for some of the best advice from industry professionals.

Project CARS GO
Originally developed as a community-funded project, Project CARS has become an established brand in its right owing to its super-realistic simulation not only in terms of visual fidelity but audio, physics and attention to detail about everything in the games. Like most major video games, it has now made the leap to the mobile gaming market as a port by industry leaders GAMEVIL for Android and iOS.
Project CARS GO features tons of licensed racing tuners from various manufacturers such as Nissan, Aston Martin, and Ferrari and while the graphics aren’t quite the same caliber as the PC, being slightly more arcade in nature, they rival any other available racing game for smartphones such as Need for Speed No Limits, Asphalt Asphalt 9 Legends and Forza Street. The game’s intuitive “One Touch” control system allows you to control your vehicle by tapping to shaft gears and holding to brake – perfect for casual play.
Marvel Future Revolution
Perhaps one of the most exciting mobile video games yet to come is Marvel Future Revolution. While there are multiple Marvel, and similar DC, Star Wars, and Star Trek games available for your inner nerd, they are all almost exactly the same, utilizing the popular turn-based, roster-building system that while fun, is becoming a little old, and is designed to provide a barrier to entry that eventually requires large amounts of money to progress.
Future Revolution, thanks to the power of modern systems, is able to take the game one step further and provide the first open-world Marvel RPG experience on a mobile device. Designed by South Korean developer Netmarble (the studio responsible for the turn-based games mentioned) the upcoming Marvel game promises amazing graphics and a unique experience as you traverse the Marvel multiverse and encounter legendary heroes and villains. Even now, not much else is known but the game is set for release in late 2021.
Tomb Raider Reloaded
Lara Croft probably needs no introduction and since the release of Tomb Raider in 1995 she has become one of the most recognizable characters in history. Since then there have been multiple sequels to the original game, highly successful movies starting Angelina Jolie and an amazing next-gen reboot by games industry legends Square Enix which has even spawned its own well-made movie spin-off starring Alicia Vikander, with another one confirmed to be on the way.
While Tomb Raider Reloaded isn’t the first mobile game from the series, it is the first that showcases the increasing power of mobile devices. Other mobile Tomb Raider games such as Lara Croft GO and The Osiris Complex are very fun games, yet they have been designed in the traditional mobile game style. The upcoming title is a fully 3D action-adventure with visuals and gameplay to match a console, looking remarkably like the surprise hit open world action RPG Fenyx Rising. Again, not much is known except from an extremely short teaser and this is also set for release in the latter half of this year.
