Wreck-It Ralph

During our wonderful trip to Disney Animation Studios we were treated to a very interesting hands-on demonstration of the motion capture system used in the movie Wreck-It Ralph. This fabulous team of talented people is headed by Evan Goldberg, manager of animation technology.

Wreck-It Ralph

We were shown by the very talented people of Disney Animation Studios just how this technology works and how it captures real life movements to bring the animated characters to life and add depth to the animated worlds.  Using this new virtual camera system, they have perfected the art of capturing the movement of live actors, therefore making each and every scene very unique, and as real as they possibly can.

How does this all work? First, they use a sound stage that is fit with several cameras that are mounted all around it to provide a 360 degree view. There are several screens where you can see exactly what you are creating. Using a hand controlled camera controlled by Maya – Autodesk Maya 3D animation software used  for animation, modelling, simulation, rendering, matchmoving and compositing – you can move the character where  you want them to go by moving the camera. It’s really like you become the character and have full control of how they are reacting within the scene.

The movements the actors make in real-time, is picked up by all of the sensors and then relayed to Maya. They also have a handheld device that will even allow the director to see where each character is in the scene. This allows him to really become a part of this animated world and direct them to where he wants them to be…… which is totally amazing!

I was able to see how this works, and it just blew my mind. Check out Carrie from CarrieWithChildren.com giving it a whirl, she was a pro! (Don’t mind my shaky camera-work 😉  The demonstration gave all of us better insight to all of the hard work that goes into making animated films. You never think about all of the people who are actually involved in creating animated movies, it’s not just computer generated.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, the WRECK-IT RALPH Blu-ray and DVD Combo Pack  will be released on 3/5/13 AND is now available via Disney Digital Download.
