BE AN AMAZING WASHINGTONIAN – STAND UP AND VOLUNTEER!

Washington, DC participates in The Amazing Spider-Man national volunteer day to benefit Stand Up To Cancer

WHO:   Join Sony Pictures Entertainment and HandsOn Greater DC Cares to celebrate the hero in all of us by volunteering on The Amazing Spider-Man™ “Be Amazing, Stand Up and Volunteer” Day. On Tuesday, June 26th, people of all ages in cities across the country will come together to give their time and energy to help their neighbors – and the day will support Stand Up To Cancer, which funds accelerated and innovative cancer research. Washingtonians can log on to www.BeAmazing2012.com to find out more information on the initiative in Washington, DC and nationwide.

WHAT:  HandsOn Greater DC Cares invited you to become a volunteer at the 46th annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival, to be held on the National Mall. This year’s programs include Citified: Arts and Creativity East of the Anacostia River, Creativity and Crisis: Unfolding the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and Campus and Community.

The Citified program will explore the ways in which the residents of the Anacostia neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C. are connected through arts and creativity by performing music, telling stories, and creating art that represent those neighborhoods. The Creativity and Crisis program marks 30th anniversary of the discovery of the AIDS virus, as well as the 25th anniversary of the creation of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, and this program will commemorate the innovative and resourceful ways through which communities have endeavored to educate people and to cope with one of the most complex epidemics in modern history. The Campus and Community highlights the creation of public and land-grant universities through the signing of the Morrill Act by President Lincoln in 1862. These universities and the USDA are working with communities to research and implement action in the areas of agriculture and food, health care, sustainable living, urban and rural revitalization, and education, and this program will bring these partnerships to life through demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on activities.

In honor of the volunteers, Sony Pictures Entertainment will make a donation to Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), an organization very close to one of the producers of the film, Laura Ziskin. A founding member of SU2C, Laura lost her battle with cancer in 2011. Registered Washington, DC volunteers will receive a “Be Amazing, Stand Up and Volunteer” t-shirt. Registration for all volunteer opportunities will be hosted online by HandsOn Greater DC Cares at www.greaterdccares.org
