The Research Behind PLANES: Fire and Rescue #FireAndRescueEvent

When you watch a movie, any movie, you get so immersed into the film that you just take for granted everything that went into the making of it. While visiting DisneyToon Studios, I learned that there is a heck of a lot of research that goes into the making of the film to make it as believable as possible, even an animated film. You may think that with an animated film there wouldn’t be as much research, but you would be wrong.

During our visit, we spoke with Paul Gerard (Director, Creative Development) & Jeff Howard (Co-Writer) about how up-close and personal the creative team behind PLANES: Fire & Rescue had to get while making the film.

To make the film as realistic as they could, the movie team took trips to visit real life aerial fighters, smoke jumpers, stunt pilots, and air traffic controllers. They went inside the various planes and helicopters to truly get a feeling of how they all worked, and what it felt like to be inside one. All of this research is what makes the movie so believable.
The previous movie PLANES, had the same amount of research, but with this new movie there were even more Planes to get to know. The Fire & Rescue Planes are different, and all perform different and equally important tasks, like Blade Ranger a fire and rescue helicopter, a super scooper named Dipper, Windlifter the heavy-lift helicopter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers. Each one of these vehicles is based on the real vehicles and people.

There is a few scenes int he movie where you see red fire-retardant dropped on the forest fires, and during the research presentation we saw a real plane dropping the retardant and it was so realistic to what they did in the film. This is why the research is so important, it lends credibility and also draws you into the film itself.

When you see the movie this July, you will see what I mean, from the planes to the forest, and even to the Grand Fusel Lodge, which is based on Yellowstone’s Old Faithful Inn, they have created such a wonderful, and realistic film.
See for yourself when the PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE opens in theaters on July 18, 2014!
