A couple of weeks ago I did a review of Newman’s Own Organics Pet food, which my pup loved! Well now I get to do a giveaway for the pet owners – Newman’s Own Organics products!
I was sent a very generous box of goodies to try out with the family, as you can see above. There were cookies, licorice, pretzels and tons of other yummy things to try. My boys were in snack heaven and I was glad they were so eager to try everything, well not the prunes, I think that is an adult thing 😉
Since receiving the box, I think we have tried everything! The boys absolutely loved all of the cookies and the licorice. Their favorite was the strawberry licorice, the pomegranate flavor was a little too strong for them. As for the cookies, the chocolate chip and the Newman-O’s were huge hits and became an after dinner dessert item.
To quote my oldest son “Who would have thought that organic food would be so good?” — that goes to show you what preconceived notions people may have of what they expect organic foods to taste like.
They are also pretzel fanatics, and tried all of the pretzels sent, even the spelt pretzels which they didn’t even bat an eye at, which considering the name, I thought I would have to field a million questions as to what spelt was, lol. I did try one of myself, out of curiosity and they were delicious! I ended up looking up spelt, since I was the one who didn’t have a clue what it was….
Spelt – Spelt is a species of wheat that was a very important crop in ancient and medieval times, but now it is only commonly grown in Europe. It’s been around in the United States since the 1890s, but it was replaced in the 20th century by bread wheat. According to Wikipedia, spelt actually requires fewer fertilizers, so the organic farming movement is making it more popular again, as is the health food industry.
Newman’s Own Organics carries several types of pretzels: Spelt • Salted Sticks • High Protein • Unsalted Rounds • Rods Thin Sticks •Salted Rounds • Honey Wheat Mini Salted Thins • Mighty Mini
I also tried the prunes and the dried apples, both were very flavorful and very fresh. Since I am always watching my weight, these are great as a snack and to get my daily fruit portion in.
I also loved all of the tins of mints that they sent: Wintergreen, Cinnamon, Peppermint and Ginger. I was especially excited to see the ginger mints since my son has always gotten car sick and ginger is the only thing that settles his stomach. Right now I have the peppermints in my purse and the ginger in the car.
About Newman’s Own Organics:
When Nell Newman and business partner Peter Meehan started Newman’s Own® Organics: The Second Generation® in 1993, they were sure there was a market for organic snack foods, but they couldn’t have anticipated just how fast the demand for their products would grow.
Nell approached her father in 1992 about the possibility of an organic division. He offered to cover one year’s expenses for Nell and Peter to determine the feasibility of an organic product line under the Newman name. The one stipulation was that, once established, they would return the seed money, so that it could be added to his charity money. They not only managed to do this within a short period of time, but also became an independent company in early 2001. This had been the goal from the beginning. They are committed to following the philanthropic role of Paul Newman and bringing out products that he would be proud to have his name associated with.
Newman’s Own® Organics’ products meet all the requirements of the USDA’s National Organic Program. Ingredients have been grown on farms that have not used artificial fertilizers or pesticides for three years or more. The farms and processors have also met the USDA’s organic standards. The products are sold nationwide in a number of mainstream supermarkets, in stores featuring natural and health foods, as well as on a number of websites.
