*ENDED* Newman’s Own Organics Premium Pet Food – Win a Pet Food Prize Pack
You may be familiar with Newman’s Own, but did you know there is also a Newman’s Own Organics company? Newman’s Own Organics is a division of Newman’s Own in 1993 by Nell Newman and her business partner, Peter Meehan, but became a separate company in early 2001. The two companies have separate lines of products.
Some of these great products includes the line of Premium Pet Food. Now as a Mom of fur babies, 1 dog, and two cats. I always look at the labels of the pet food to look for natural ingredients, sounds easy enough, but let me tell you, it’s been really tough finding food that doesn’t contain a lot of fillers and other junk. I always try and buy pet food that lists meat as the first ingredient, but even that is tough.
The wonderful people at Newman’s Own Organics sent me a dog sampler for my dog, Mystique, and I, to review. Before I do that, I want to share with you what is in Newman’s Own Organics Pet products and what is NOT.
What’s In:
Natural Chicken – Raised without growth hormones and antibiotics and fed only a 100% natural, all-vegetable diet, the chicken meat provides amino acids essential for muscles, hormones, enzymes, antibodies and structural and protective tissues.
Natural Chicken Meal – Defined by Association American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) as being “ground or otherwise reduced in particle size”, meal serves as a concentrated source of amino acids that is low in ash (minerals), moisture and fat.
Chicken Fat – Highly palatable source of essential fatty acids.
Organic* Soy Meal – A concentrated source of low-fat, bio-available protein. There is no evidence to indicate that dogs or cats are allergic to soy or that it causes bloat or other digestive disturbances in animals.
Organic* Brown Rice -Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these whole grains supply complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and B vitamins and beneficial fiber to maintain a healthy digestive tract and promote normal stools. The healthful oils in rice bran contain important phytonutrients, including heart-healthy oryzanols.
Organic* Barley – Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these whole grains provide vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B6, biotin, complex carbohydrates, tocotrienols (a potent antioxidant) and beneficial fibers.
Organic* Peas – Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these legumes supply complex carbohydrates, vitamin A and c, iron and beneficial fiber to support digestive function… pets like the taste of peas.
Organic* Flax Seed Meal – A rich source of linoleic and omega-3 fatty acids as well as essential amino acids. Flax is a good source of magnesium, phosphorous and copper, and a very good source of dietary fiber, thiamin and manganese. It also contains vitamins including B group and E. Flax is a recommended source for lignans, an important phytonutrient with powerful antioxidant properties.
Organic* Oats – Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these whole grains supply B-complex vitamins, fiber and complex carbohydrates to help maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Organic* Carrots – Provide vitamins A and C, powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and support healthy vision, and the important phytonutrient beta-carotene.
Organic* Sorghum – A good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, calcium and other important micronutrients, including iron. (Sorghum is an important cereal crop whereas molasses is made from sugar beet or cane).
Fresh Parsley – Serves as an intestinal calmative and aids in nutrient absorption and elimination of gastric odors leading to “doggie breath”. Good source of vitamins C and A, iron and calcium.
Kelp – A good source of essential vitamins and minerals (including iodine).
Taurine – an essential amino acid for cats that supports cardiovascular and neurological function. Now thought to be important in maintaining heart function in certain breeds of dogs, including Cocker spaniels and Golden retrievers.
*Organically certified by USDA-National Organics Program.
What’s Not:
NO Poultry by-products – Ground, rendered, cleaned slaughtered poultry carcass parts such as necks, feet, lymph nodes, undeveloped eggs and intestines (and a small amount of feathers). The quality is very inconsistent between batches. Note: By product meals are often derived from 4-D meat sources – defined as food animals that have been rejected for human consumption because they were presented to the meat packing plant as “Dead, Dying, Disabled or Diseased”.
NO Chemical fertilizers – Chemical fertilizers have been incriminated in serious health problems in animals and are not allowed in organic-certified products.
NO Antibiotics or steroids – Long-term daily administration may result in a compromised immune system, muscle wasting, and destruction of the friendly bacteria living in the intestines that aid the digestion of food and assimilation of nutrients.
NO Chemical additives or artificial preservatives – Chemical antioxidants, such as ethoxyquin, BHT or BHA, that were designed to extend the shelf life and reduce fat spoilage (rancidity) of pet foods may cause allergic reactions and affect liver and kidney functions.
NO Wheat or corn – Wheat and corn may cause allergies in some dogs and cats.
NO Artificial flavors – Flavor enhancers are produced by the enzymatic liquefaction or hydrolysis of animal tissue. Those made with phosphoric acid are particularly appealing to cats because they produce a “tingling” sensation on the tongue.
NO Artificial Colors and Dyes – Coloring agents provide an artificial “rich and meaty” look to modify the appearance of highly processed foods and make them more appealing to pet owners.
Mystique LOVED all of the food that was sent. The wet food is what really impressed me. It was smooth and creamy, almost like a pate, not shaped like the can and smelly. I have to be honest, some of the canned food that we normally buy really makes me gag, and then I feel bad feeding it to my dog. This food didn’t assault my nose and was visually appealing, you could actually see the veggies in the food. I wasn’t sure if she would eat it since she has a weird thing about textures, but I’ll let you decide if she liked it or not:
They also sent me two bags of snacks, Peanut Butter and Chicken & Rice Snack Sticks. She loves peanut butter, so I knew she would love the snacks and she did. And as you can see below, she is also a big fan of the sticks:
