A few weeks ago we have the pleasure of watching the short film Riley’s First Date and interviewing two of the stars Kyle Maclachlan and Kaitlyn Dias, who also star in the hit Disney/Pixar film Inside Out as Riley’s Dad and as Riley the main character.
The short centers around Riley who is about to go on her first date ever with that skater boy you see at the end of Inside Out. As you can imagine, the emotions that are running through not only her but her parents and her date, are crazy! We get to see them all and how they are dealing with this huge milestone in a young Riley’s life.
Since the movie revolves around Riley’s first date we asked Kaitlyn if she had hers yet, to which she replied that she had not but hopes that it goes as smoothly as Riley’s did in the movie. She also said she thought that her Mom would probably be cool with it but her Dad would be the one to watch since like most Dads, he is overprotective of his little girl, much like the short.
Speaking of Dad’s, Riley’s Dad, aka Kyle Maclachlan has a young son of his own. We wondered if his son Callum had seen him in Inside Out and what he thought about his Dad playing Riley’s Dad. At 7 years old the biggest thing on his mind was why Kyle had a mustache. He did ask more questions about the film and why things happened making it apparent that the film was and is for everyone.
Even though Kyle has a few years before his son’s first date, playing the Dad getting ready for this event was interesting. Kyle went on to discuss how much of the character he brought to life from his own life. He explained that he used his relationship with his young son to create the basis for Riley’s Dad, like the laid-back nature and the patience that he has.
Speaking of emotions Kaitlyn revealed to us that when she was first brought on to the project (Inside Out) a scratch voice (when an actor lend their voice for the test run of an animated film). She was completely blown away that she would go on to do the feature, her first animated gig. At 11 years old she was able to bring emotions to the character that she could relate to, like moving away from friends, etc. Working on this film brought some insight as far as her own emotions said Kaitlyn, “the concept of it definitely gets inside your head, especially after watching it. It was just like, oh, Joy must be at the controls now.”
Kyle and Kaitlyn did such a wonderful job of voicing we asked if this was something that they would want to do more of and they both answered positively. Being able to focus more on the character in your head than on screen was helpful to Kyle. The process took about a year and a half to complete, so that was also nice in that there was time to really develop the character.
The takeaway from the film according to Kyle was the realization that we have all gone through the emotions in the movie and that your children are going to experience all kinds of emotions, even painful ones but as a family you can all get through them together. Kaitlyn wanted people to recognize when your child is dealing with something big so that they can be there for them and help them through it. Communication is key and “that it’s definitely best to listen to your parents.”
So what does the future hold for both Kaitlyn and Kyle? Kaitlyn is currently interested in doing both voice acting and on-camera, and Kyle is started on Twin Peaks.
