Being 10 in 1980, I can proudly say that I am indeed a child of the 80’s. When I heard about The Goldbergs, a new ABC show chronicling an 80’s family, I knew I had to tune in.
The Goldbergs are sort of this generations Wonder Years, complete with a voice-over by Patton Oswalt. It follows a middle-class family of five, and an spry Grandfather played by George Segal. Beverly, the over protective Mom with the perfectly coiffed 80’s hair, is played superbly by Wendi McLendon-Covey. The Dad, Murray is an often terse but turns out to be a big teddy bear is played by Jeff Garlin. They are the parents of 3 kids, Erica (Hayley Orrantia), who is the typical 17 year girl of the 80’s, her brother Barry (Troy Gentile), just wants to do his own thing, and stay away from his parents, oh and he wants a car, seriously, that’s what he lives for. Then there’s 11-year-old Adam (Sean Giambrone), who documents all of the family’s antics.
Don’t expect the show to be all fluff from the 80’s vault of what was cool back then, although you will find yourself exclaiming at the TV “I remember that” or “I had that!” The parents on the show aren’t typical sugary sitcom parents, and neither are the kids. They are pretty true to form if you ask me and that is one of the reasons I love this show. The nostalgia factor won it for me anyway, getting to relive my childhood through The Goldbergs each week is just totally awesome!
