Review | Downton Abbey: A New Era on Blu-ray

The much-anticipated cinematic return of Downton Abbey follows the Crawleys and their staff as they welcome a movie crew and their glamorous stars to Downton for the filming of a new silent movie, while other members of the family go on a grand adventure to a villa in the south of France to uncover a mystery about the Dowager Countess and her past.

If you are a fan, you owe it to yourself to watch this one. I’m serious, there are some developments that you will want to see.

We have a few storylines happening in this new film, the biggest being the Dowager Countess of the Abbey inheriting a villa in France. The suspicion around why she is gifted this villa was fun, in that you end up going along with what they think she might have down to deserve such a huge gift. None of it is anything you would expect from Violet.

Back at home, Downton is in need of money for roof repairs so they let a Hollywood movie crew film there. This was in the era when silent films were ending and talkies were just starting. This leads to some funny scenes with the Downton staff and with Lady Mary and the charming director. Let’s just say that we don’t get to see Mary’s husband who is off on a business trip and this leads to some interesting scenes.

I really loved this film and I really liked how they caught us up with the family and the staff, we were able to see where they all were currently, and in some cases, where they are in the future.
