So you have a blog, and you are working hard to promote it, so what do you do to get people to visit it? If you are consistently writing, and have a a hold on your niche, then you may want to start thinking about Social Media.

Let’s focus on Twitter

After I created Free Sample Momma, I immediately signed up for an account on Twitter. I had been using Twitter previously for my freelance business and knew the benefits it provided.

You may be one of those people who just don’t get it. Why on earth would you want to read what people were having for lunch, or what their mood of the day was? Seriously, to a newbie, Twitter just seems silly and self-adsorbed. Right? Well, guess what? It is and this is exactly what you want and need to promote your blog.

In order to get your blog noticed, it entails a lot of self-promotion….. Twitter is a great tool for doing just that, BUT don’t be “A Drive-By Tweeter.”

Drive-By Tweeters are people that post a link to their blog and that’s it, their whole stream is littered with blog posts and there is no interaction whatsoever. I see this all the time, just a simple link to a Facebook page or blog and nothing else. You never see @ replies to other Tweeters and there is virtually no personality.

Twitter works both ways, you get what you give. You can promote your blog, your contest, your Facebook, what have you, but you must be willing to interact with the people you follow or who follow you.

Speaking of following, another common mistake I see people make is following every single person who follows you. I did this when I first started out and my Twitter stream was so littered with spam and junk, that in a fit of desperation, I deleted everyone and started over. I only accepted people who I knew weren’t spammers (you get a knack for those who make it their job to spam), and focused on people I knew wanted to read my Tweets.

And I made so many great friends……..You all know who you are 😉

I absolutely love my Twitter followers because not only do they offer valuable feedback that helps my site grow, they also offer a real connection to the person who is reading my blog. It offers immediate feedback that can be used to make your blog and posts better in the long-run.

I have also made wonderful connections with various brands and companies. Many of my giveaways are from being contacted on Twitter because they liked a Tweet I posted or saw that I showed an interest in their product. This is monumental if you want to get into reviews and giveaways on your blog.

It’s all about making connections, with your followers, your readers, companies, brands and most importantly, being social, which is the whole point of Social Media.
