Review | PAWS OF FURY: The Legend of Hank

PAWS OF FURY: The Legend of Hank comes to us from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. The movie is centered around Hank (Michael Cera) who finds himself in a town full of cats who need a hero to defend them from a ruthless villain’s (Ricky Gervais) evil plot to wipe their village off the map. With help from a reluctant teacher (Samuel L. Jackson) to train him, our underdog must assume the role of town samurai and team up with the villagers to save the day. The only problem… cats hate dogs!

The primary influence of this film is, believe it or not, Blazing Saddles. Now some of you might not even be old enough to remember this movie, but if you are a fan in any way of Mel Brooks, who is also in this film, then you will definitely hear it in the jokes and see it in some of the scenes.

Ricky Gervais as “Ika Chu” and George Takei as “Ohga” in Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, Align, and Aniventure.

When the village of cats goes under attack the Shogun (Mel Brooks) must find a Samurai to protect the village and to help him find one, he turns to the local magistrate, Ika Chu (Ricky Gervais), who unbeknownst to the Shogun, is actually the one trying to destroy the village.

This is where Hank (Michael Cera), a dog, comes in. Ika Chu gives him the job of Samurai, even though he has no training whatsoever. He assumes that everyone in the village will want to kill Hank because he is a dog in the land of cats. This feels like Blazing Saddles and the black Sherrif coming into a town of white people. Of course, children are not gonna get this reference or any of the other Blazing Saddles references (the horse scene) but many adults will, if not the parents, the Grandparents definitely will.

Michael Cera as “Hank” and Samuel L. Jackson as “Jimbo” in Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank from Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies, Align, and Aniventure.

After the entire town looks at Hank like he’s an alien, a retired Samurai by the name of Jimbo (Samuel L. Jackson) takes him under his wing and trains him. I won’t give the rest of the film away but as you can imagine, there’s lots of action, adventure, and laughs.

As you can see, the cast is pretty stellar, and I have to say that I really love hearing Mel Brooks in the role of the Shogun! I really enjoyed the movie and the characters. There’s some potty humor, some jokes that only the adults will get, but I think everyone will enjoy it. I recommend this movie for children over 7.

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank is a fun movie for kids and a nice throwback to an amazingly funny film of yesteryear.
