It is a gray rainy day in Buffalo and I am awaiting a call from sunny California. If that sounds like a setup for a romantic comedy, it probably has been. The man from whom I am awaiting this call, Paul Greene, could have starred in this film. In fact, if it took place at Christmas, he probably has.
I say that because, with an ever-growing resume, including two new entries this holiday season, Paul has received the moniker “King of Christmas”. When I ask him about that, he laughs and says someone came up with it because with a count on IMDb, they found he made the most holiday romcoms. It was a bit embarrassing and flattering, but he’ll take it, even if it was “clickbait”.
More Than Clickbait
Ironically, our discussion starts far from the world of meet-cutes. Paul Greene is a very busy man. He has a podcast and a project with his wife and partner, Kate Austin, that is very dear to his heart. Their website, Freedom Alchemist, is a tri-fold focus on total health and freedom from limits of any kind. Paul brings his long history with physical fitness, having served as a fitness model, and even now in the romantic comedy world as Paul says (laughingly), “you never know when you have to take your shirt off”. On the mental and spiritual side, Ms. Austin brings extensive education including high-level training with Tony Robbins and a master’s degree in Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
Paul is very proud to share this part of his life because it comes from the loss of his father to ALS. When he learned of the diagnosis, he threw himself into researching ways to extend life, especially the quality of life. Unfortunately, Paul’s father did not survive his brave battle but Paul pours his passion into helping others. In fact, he says few things make him happier than when his fans from the movies tell him that they are a part of Freedom Alchemist’s work and their lives have changed for the better.
And there is, indeed, a fan base.
Love the Love
All kidding aside, Paul Greene did not get the name “King of Christmas” for no reason. Prior to this season, he had 11 under his belt. This year brings him to 13 happy Christmas love stories. And love is at the heart of it. The viewer loves watching him find his path and he loves making them.
Paul is attracted to these films for the same reason as the rest of us. We all need a little lightness and happiness in our lives right now and these films do that. This season, Paul is bringing two rays of light with “I’m Glad it’s Christmas” on HULU and “Fit for Christmas” on CBS, Paramount+. Not only will his current fans find him shining but likely many more will find their way to the King’s court.
In “I’m Glad it’s Christmas”, Paul had the unique opportunity to work with the glorious Gladys Knight. Of course, I couldn’t pass up asking him about working with her. It turns out that a film with a play on her name was also her first big role (I can tell you that I had no idea watching the screen). Paul is very impressed by her. She is “so funny and smart, and surprisingly young”. Hearing him talk of this experience with Gladys, as well as with co-star, Jessica Lowndes, it is clear that Paul enjoys making the films as much as many of us enjoy watching.
Living the Life He Loves
For me, the real appeal of these romances is the approachability of the characters. While, of course, they are very attractive people, (Of course) I feel like they are people that I could know. It’s mental comfort food. This flatters Paul. It’s exactly what he hopes for. If we can project ourselves into the flick, he’s doing his job as an actor. Moreso, it’s going back to his larger goal as a person. The films show people taking risks, following their dreams, and eventually living a life they love. Which is exactly what he is doing and what he wants for everyone.
Alas, as I said Paul is a busy man and our time has come to a close. I shall say this, he is as delightful on our call as in his cannon of fun holiday films and I shall be tuning in this week for his new one on Paramount+, “Fit for Christmas”. It’s a great way to start the countdown to Christmas.
A big thank you to Paul “King of Christmas” Greene. I can’t argue with the title as he is an awfully nice guy who carries the spirit with him off-camera.
