On July 31st the Disney Channel premiered Descendants, and it was a HUGE success! Friday’s premiere averaged 6.55 million viewers! That is a lot of people tuning in and for good reason.
It is no secret that I have an affinity for Disney villains, especially Maleficent. So when I saw the premise behind Descendants I was excited to see just how they were going to create this whole new generation of villains.
In a present day idyllic kingdom, the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney’s iconic “Beauty and the Beast”) is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation: offer a chance at redemption to the trouble-making offspring of Cruella de Vil, Maleficent the Evil Queen and Jafar who have been imprisoned on a forbidden island with all the other villains, sidekicks, evil step-mothers and step-sisters. These villainous descendants (Carlos, Mal, Evie and Jay, respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes, including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan. However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?
Descendants is like a darker version of High School Musical, only in the way that it’s a tween based Disney musical. There is drama and the normal angst of teenagers but this time you have more of a backstory with the main characters having extremely popular parents such as Maleficent played by Kristin Chenoweth, the Evil Queen played by Kathy Nijimy, Cruella de Vil played by Wendy Raquel Robinson and last by\ut not least, Maz Jobrani as Jafar.
The kids are played by Dove Cameron (TV’s “Liv & Maddie”) as Mal the daughter of Maleficent, Cameron Boyce (TV’s “Jessie”) as Carlos the son of Cruella de Vil, Booboo Stewart (“X-Men Days of Future Past,” “Twilight”) as Jay the son of Jafar and Sofia Carson (TV’s “Austin & Ally”) as Evie the daughter of the Evil Queen.
Prince Ben (Mitchell Hope) declares he would like the villain kids to go to school in Auradon. Of course, the kids have other things in mind and try and wreak some havoc but I will leave that for you to see.
If you have tweens, they will love this movie, but be prepared to for them to watch it a million times over. 🙂
